New Music – Thanks Dad

I posted this photo to instagram today for #tbt along w/ the caption – “Thanks #dad, for instilling in me an appreciation of #music at such a young age. Also, OG hipster status – ha! #tbt”

And it’s true. I have my dad to thank for turning me on to music at such a young age, and for introducing me to some really great bands. Yes, that’s a reel to reel in the background. Unfortunately, that record collection no longer exists. In a moment that I know he’d like to have back, my dad sold all of his records when they moved about a decade ago. So for his retirement last year (congrats!), I bought him a new record player and a few classic albums to help him rebuild his archives.

Then I got to thinking about how we discover new music. What with Amazon’s new music service launching today, there’s certainly no shortage of curated playlists to browse through. But with that comes a certain lack of serendipity that I think is such a fun part of the discovery process.

And that brings me to the point of this post. Serendipity. And new music.

My wife and I were out for a walk on a Sunday evening in the West Village. We wandered over to Hudson River Park and stumbled onto Sam Cieri doing a set at Pier 45.

This is happening right now. @davidb_cook , you ready? #mj

Hearing that, we bought a few beers, sat down, and were treated to an awesome set of covers for the next hour. Sam’s got an EP of original music out now that I’ve had on repeat for the last few days that you can stream for free at his website. Check it out. I think you’ll enjoy it –

Oh, and thanks dad, for everything. I love you. Happy Father’s Day.
